European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
